We got word there was a low mileage 1991 Acura NSX locally that the original owner was looking to finally part ways with and we jumped in a car that day to go check it out. The deal was made and we trailered our find back down to our shop in SLC, UT. We don’t know about you, but for most of us here at LUXE Automotive, the Acura NSX is an icon that all of us would love to have sitting in our personal garage.

Known as the Honda NSX, North America sold the car as an Acura. NSX stands for “New”, “Sportscar” “eXperimental.” Honda wanted to offer reliability with a lower price point and meet or exceed the performance of the then V8 engine Ferrari lineup. Gordon Murray, the designer of the McLaren F1 supercar, stated he used the NSX as inspiration for the F1, stating that the design was “monumental” to sportscar design. He was so fond of the NSX that he bought one for personal use and drove it for 75,000km, stating the NSX was “dear to his heart.” The NSX was designed by a team led by Chief Designer Masahito Nakano and Executive Chief Engineer Shigeru Uehara. They created a 2 seater mid-engine rear-wheel-drive coupe sports car. The Japanese icon benefited from advanced aerodynamics and styling inspired by an F-16 fighter jet cockpit, & it also took input from F1 World Champion, Ayrton Senna during the final development stages. It became the world’s first mass-produced car to feature an all-aluminum body. The NSX put 270 horsepower down when new thanks to an all-aluminum 3.0L V6 engine featuring VTEC, (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control,) and five-speed manual transmission. It’s a fast car but it’s not record-setting. However track numbers say nothing about useable performance, and this machine is so honest and predictable in its responses that most of its track performance is also useful performance.

The car came over to Utah from California with its original owner in 2019. Only 38,000 original miles read on the odometer so the Acura needed a little love once we got ahold of it. It was dropped off at Jerry Lambert Automotive for all the mechanical service. The timing belt, water pump, valve cover gaskets, window regulator, oil pan gasket, fuel filter, brake fluid flush, and tires were all taken care of. We got the Formula Red paint cleaned up with a paint correction and repainted the front bumper due to cracking that had occurred from sitting. The Ivory Leather on the interior cleaned up beautifully. It drove and ran smoothly after completed maintenance. The NSX is a top choice for pure driving pleasure. Power is not the centerpiece of this car. This car is about motion, about translating driver talent directly into g-forces. It is a fighter jet for the road!

“For a quick blast, the Ferrari F40 is more fun. But in a half-hour I’m done with it,” says one of our crew. The NSX, on the other hand, is a splendid partner for a quickie and we’re never done with it. We would drive it every day. We’d happily commute in it. In the quest for perfection, Honda is used to playing in a tougher league. It holds itself to higher standards. One example: Despite the NSX’s speed, it’s not a gas guzzler, not even close. On one recent 713-mile trip, we logged 25.5 mpg. Another example: to reduce transmission noise, the 1994 NSX has re-contoured gear teeth.”

Fun Fact: Honda built a special factory for the NSX production

Where did April go?

A client was seeking out his and her Porsche’s, and we quickly found, inspected, and delivered two choice cars. The first being a 2004 Porsche Carrera cabriolet in speed yellow with a manual transmission. The second is a 2017 Miami Blue 911 Turbo.
