In today’s market, where new DIY “ceramic” coatings are advertised daily and claim professional-grade quality, making an informed choice can be daunting. It’s crucial to discern the differences among protection products, and we’re here to guide you. The diagram below helps distinguish between our two most sought-after products: PPF and Ceramic coating.

What is a Ceramic Coating?

A ceramic (or glass) coating is a sealant and protectant which serves as a sacrificial layer to protect your vehicle’s paint. Ceramic coatings are relatively new to the automotive industry and have taken the market by storm. These coatings have replaced traditional waxes and other sealants, as they have proven to be much more durable when applied properly. These coatings are made from materials that are more durable than the polymers found in traditional sealants and waxes giving you a more durable, longer-lasting protection. In addition to forming a very strong bond with the clear coat finish, a coating is generally much thicker than a wax or sealant, creating a sacrificial layer that can absorb damage and better protect the paint underneath. The thickness gives it a great depth of gloss that’s hard to achieve with other products. Most coatings will easily give years of protection when properly applied.

Waxes have been popular for decades and are a relatively inexpensive method of sealing off a vehicle's paint. These waxes are very soft and not very durable, with a lifespan of only 6-8 weeks. The bond between a wax and a vehicle's paint is very weak and can be stripped away by detergents or on a very hot day, as the wax has a very low melting point.

A synthetic sealant is a much better solution than a traditional wax thanks to the strong synthetic polymers which bond much better with a vehicle's clear coat, making them more resistant to heat. These sealants can last 6-8 months, however they can still be stripped off a vehicle if washed with harsh detergents.

Ceramic paint coatings are the latest & greatest vehicle paint sealants. These coatings are extremely durable and offer a deep gloss finish as well as hydrophobic properties. Unlike waxes and synthetic sealants, these coatings are resistant to harsh detergents. A ceramic paint coating often requires professional installation and may take more time to prep and apply. A well-cared for ceramic coating can last many years.

Types of Coatings

Paint coatings are the most common coating inquiry that we receive. Modesta offers a variety of coatings for use on painted surfaces. These coatings are specially formulated to be durable when installed and cured properly. Every coating has a variable lifespan which will ultimately be decided on by the client’s needs. Modesta’s paint coatings include:

BC-08: 2-3 year lifespan*

BC-04: 3-5 year lifespan*

BC-05: 3-5 year lifespan*

*with proper care

Wheel & Caliper Coatings

Lesser known but very effective are ceramic wheel and caliper coatings. These coatings are specially formulated for use on high-temp surfaces. Modesta’s BC-06 is unique as it is a spray-on application. BC-06 is heat resistant up to 2300*F. This coating is a great solution for keeping wheels and calipers clean of burning-hot brake dust.

Glass Coating

Modesta’s EGC (Exterior Glass Coating) is self explanatory. The coating is intended to be used only on glass surfaces, specifically exterior glass. This coating will bead water up and reduce the use of windshield wipers.

Plastic Coating

Modesta’s EPC (Exterior Plastic Coating) is an excellent protection solution for any vehicle that has raw plastic bumper trims, flares and other exterior components. This coating can re-condition some plastics and reduce severe UV fading.

Leather Coating

Modesta’s LPS coating is a two-stage coating which is formulated for use on leather vehicle interiors. This coating can be used on seats, arm rests and other leather components in the vehicle to reduce staining and general friction-caused wear. The base layer greatly limits or outright stops many common liquids from penetrating into the surface, reduces color transfer and makes cleaning of the surface easier with less chemicals. The top “Slider” layer reduces surface friction on exposed parts of the interiors (bolsters) and reduces usual wear and tear.

We’ve had years of experience with all types of coatings from both large and small manufacturers of coatings. After extensive research and testing, we’ve decided that Modesta is simply the most advanced coating on the market.

Yes. While we like to believe that a new vehicle’s paint is perfect, the truth is often far from that. Even new exotic vehicles come with imperfections from the factory or can be damaged in transit/during dealership handling. Our paint refinement process also prepares the paint to allow the coating to bond as best as possible. Without this step, a coating may not last as long as desired.

A ceramic coating provides an extremely durable layer over the top of your vehicle’s soft and susceptible clear coat. This layer is meant to resist chemicals such as bug acids, bird droppings and other environmental fallout that could otherwise eat away at your vehicle’s paint. These coatings can last anywhere from 2 years to 10 years with proper care.

Preparing your vehicle for a professionally installed ceramic coating

One of the most common questions we get is with regard to the necessity of a paint correction prior to the installation of a Modesta ceramic coating. Whether the vehicle is brand new or 20 years old, refining and perfecting the paint on your vehicle is pertinent before your paint is sealed off for 3 or more years. Even a showroom-new vehicle has imperfections and those imperfections should be addressed prior to the installation of any coating. This process also ensures that the surface of your paint is stripped of any sealants, waxes and contaminants that may weaken the bond between the coating and the painted surface. The use of a coating-specific compound is used as a means of promoting a strong and durable bond that will ensure you get the most out of your Modesta paint coating.
