Fresh production Mustangs that were sent to Saleen, a special vehicle manufacturer, and come out the other side are bound to be special. Saleen gave the front and rear fascias a makeover. The GT’s 4.6L V8 remains internally stock but received underdrive accessory pulleys, a remapped ECU requiring premium fuel, and a free-flow air filter. The most interesting of changes is probably the stainless steel exhaust system which utilizes twin mufflers and a vacuum-actuated bypass valve. The latter opens at a specified pressure, looping some of the exhaust through the less restrictive mufflers and short tailpipes. Focused at receiving increased low-end torque and a serious rumbling sound. The suspension was stiffened as well. All these mods take the Mustang driving experience up a notch. It’s fun to play the exhaust system, opening and closing the bypass valves, thereby increasing the bass, with your right foot. Nearly every aspect of the Saleens character has been honed for better performance.
